Western Spirit - Block Mount
- Story
When I was a child, I loved going fishing on my uncle Johnny’s boat, the “Bromada” with my brother Art and cousin John. We were too young to do any of the actual fishing and we stayed out of the crew's way as they went about
their jobs.
Even though we boys were unable to help, as we cruised through an area we kept a watchful eye for salmon jumping, which indicated a school of fish. It was a thrill to spot a jumper and give the traditional cry, “Aiyo!”, then step back and watch everyone go into action as the table seiner did her job.
These were the days of hand-pulling seine nets. Everyone remembers those days fondly, but most are glad that Seine boats now use drums for pulling nets. I have a friend from Kitkatla who shares these childhood memories, and today owns a seine boat that fishes the same areas as his father did.
Cecil Hill owns the “Western spirit” and makes his living from the sea as did his ancestors before him.
