I was always the quiet one. My favorite answer when requested to speak was, \"A picture is worth a thousand words, just look at my prints\".\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eOne day on life's great journey, a change began with one incredible experience. I was on the west coast of Vancouver Island on my boat Eagle Dancer, when an eagle appeared and flew straight to me at about 200 feet up in the air. As the eagle passed over, I gave it my best eagle call, and, to my surprise, the eagle turned in the air, and as it turned, it dropped an eagle feather from its tail. A few seconds later, as I tried to catch it, the feather landed on my chest! I was struck by the significance of this event. I was born into the eagle clan of Kitkatla, British Columbia, so as the days passed, I wondered about the message of that gift of the eagle feather. One evening in my meditation and prayer time, I remembered that feathers had been used in talking circles for generations. The message that came to me was loud and clear, as if somebody spoke the words, \"It is time for you to speak, Roy.\" My quiet answer was that I didn't do that sort of thing. However, the message was repeated, and I was reminded that my heart, eyes, and ears are always open to the lessons from my teachers. I silently agreed that if I was asked to speak, I would do so.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eIt has been twenty-two years since I began my journey as a speaker and storyteller, and I've been asked many times to speak to thousands of people and continue to do so. When I was a young man of the age 25, working in the Saanich Fire Department in Victoria, I thought I would retire at 55 or 60 and live a life of leisure. Instead, I retired from that job at the age of 27 and began my life as an artist. The time has flown by with many rewards along the way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eIt's hard to believe that I am an old age pensioner and the thought of retiring from this life as an artist seems ridiculous, so I think I'll keep on for another 35 years. A local man took the time to teach me the basics of surfing. I enjoyed the warm Hawaiian waters and big waves for a month and a bit. Those days of surfing in my younger years have always kept me interested in the sport. I first came to Tofino as a commercial fisherman in 1980. I learned that surfers from far away places came to surf the Matlahaw break on the Hesquiaht Peninsula. Surfing has been popular among Tofino residents for many generations. As a matter of fact, the home I owned in Tofino had a fabricated furnace in the basement with a surfer image cut out of steel and applied to the door because the previous owner loved to surf. When I asked around, I heard of surf spots like Wickaninnish, Combers, Long Beach, Cox Bay, South Chesterman, Rosie Bay, Chestermans and Florencia as well as Matlahaw.\u003cbr\u003eI still enjoy the intimate contact with the sea, sitting on a surf board waiting for a good wave to carry me away. I have been to a few of the favorite haunts of the local dudes and found many surfers from around the world enjoying the waters of the West Coast of Vancouver Island. For the Tofino locals, it is a privilege to have world class surfing right at our front door. This is one of my grandfather’s, Henry Vickers, favorite areas on the coast. The canal is a long cruise into the Kitlope and it is gorgeous. It was one of those summer days when the skies were so blue that it seemed to dominate the scenery. I thought of the many whales we had observed over a few days of traveling and the great, mythical Thunderbird was nonexistent. I worked hard and took the advice of the Pettinger family, owners of Pacific Sands Resort, as well as Mary and Dillis, owners of The Mini Motel. Many others in Tofino supported me and coached me along and I am thankful for their support as long as I live. Mr. and Mrs. Pettinger are gone now but their family still owns and operates Pacific Sands Resort. I was visiting one day and learned something that I had been ignorant of for almost fifteen years, and that was the existence of a place called Rosie Bay near Pacific Sands. Raven brought the light to a world that was surviving in darkness, the light was from the sun, moon, and stars. So this would be Raven the Creator. The stories also tell us that Raven loved food and had a voracious appetite and would sometimes come through the smoke holes of houses when the fish were being smoked and help himself to the food. On one of these food-stealing episodes, Raven ate so much that he got stuck in the smoke hole and was turned black by the smoke. There are so many ancient legends about these whales as well as modern stories. The most recent whale known to the world is Luna; an incredible story of a young whale who loved boats and people. Luna’s friendly nature brought an untimely death underneath a tugboat. Luna got too close to the spinning propeller of the tugboat and was struck dead. We will all miss this beautiful whale. Our time reminder was the ebb and flow of running tide. Our music was the cry of Eagle, Raven and gulls; the song of the Whale, and howl of the wolf. I cannot recall the word “boring”. After a half-century of living in British Columbia, it is no surprise that I often can be found in the village of Tofino on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. I love to play with my children on the beach, watching a sunset, looking for passing whales at sea, or building castles in the sand. I do believe I will always return to the joy of the sea near some Ocean Village. This drawing has finally inspired me to create my own work called Orca and so I share this work with you today. So it is that this rendition of Orca was inspired by a work over a century old that was sketched by an observer and published in a book. I will never forget waking to the sound of the surf and scent of fresh salt sea air. The feel of the gentle west wind brought memories rushing to my mind like a huge wave. I experienced the rekindling of a passion for the sea, the call of the running tide, the cry of a gull like a love song on the wind; all these things were strangely familiar. Pictures of a little boy who loved the the beach came to me and the feelings of the child within me came out strongly and flooded my senses with an old love of the sea. I never lost that love, and after many years in Tofino with a beautiful gallery, I have experienced the same passion in thousands of people who tour the area. Today I find myself living near Victoria, British Columbia dreaming of my next trip to Long Beach. There are many who come to this area to be married or to celebrate a marriage. Today, there are a few who are bringing back the old traditional whale hunt incorporating spiritual discipline. This is a good thing, for it brings back the spirit of a nation that has existed since the earliest times. We were visited by a sea lion, a Dall’s porpoise, and a mother and calf humpback whale. The porpoise played with us, swimming back and forth across the bow of our boat as we cruised into Whale Point. Close by the Cetacea Lab was a large Eagle nest with the two eagles tending an egg or two.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAt the end of an incredible day in the Great Bear Rainforest area, we found a secluded anchorage in a bay the boys called Jellyfish Bay due to the large numbers of jellyfish that discouraged swimming. As the sunset bathed us in a golden glow, my son Jordan rowboat rode with his siblings, fishing and photographing everything he found interesting, from barnacles on the beach to a most glorious sunset. This name for the moon in the middle of winter can be found in other cultures as well. In the shamanic tradition, the winter is the time of the elder; we hear the saying, “the winter of their years,” when referring to the elders. The colour of the winter is white, and so is the hair of the old ones. When those relatives have passed through the winter, they leave this world and become ancestors on the other side. In our language, we have a saying: When one is walking in the truth, beauty, and strength of oneself, it is said that they are walking on the breath of the ancestors. I remember the first home I bought had a huge furnace, and the door had a unique handmade emblem of a surfer. I asked the local man who made it if he surfed, and he told me he did so in his younger days. He didn't seem that old to me not to surf. Well, here I am at sixty-two, and I enjoy watching the surfers. I remember the last time I surfed, which was more than a couple of years ago. I think, like my old friend Jim, that the younger ones can ride the waves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI watched a local surf competition in Tofino this month, which took me back to those days when I sat on my board off Chesterman Beach waiting for waves.\u003cbr\u003ePeople think it's too crazy to be out there in the winter months, but that's when some of the best waves can be found. The ocean does not change more than a few degrees between the hottest summer day and the middle of winter. Some of the top surfers in the world are local guys who grew up in Tofino or have moved there to enjoy our West Coast surf.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy thanks to Tofino's Jeremy Koreski, who took the photo that inspired me, and to Raph Bruhwiler, the local surfer in the picture. I went to my home village of Kitkatla that summer and was fishing for crabs with an elder when we came across this very large octopus. We managed to catch it and bring it on board. Chester, the elder told me that young men used to prove their bravery by reaching up inside the octopus' arms to grab its beak and pull it out while it was still alive thus ending its life and showing great courage. I then took the large octopus and followed the instructions, and we enjoyed a fresh meal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eWhen I moved to Tofino and opened the Eagle Aerie Gallery, I also did a lot of scuba diving in the waters around Tofino. When the Stanley Park Aquarium diver came to Tofino to collect species, I was his assistant. We recovered several live octopi, and I always remember a tiny octopus we had accidentally recovered. I support the Dogwood Initiative so one can see that my heart is with the land and sea, and I will fight to protect what we have left. When Mark Hobson called me and asked for my involvement with this group, I did not hesitate. I traveled with my son, William, to Hartley Bay and then King Pacific Lodge on the north end of the Great Bear Rainforest. I was drawn to this area because of my history and ancestors who lived here thousands of years ago. A visit to the Cetacea Lab at Whale Point has changed me forever. I was given another view of the area, the sea, and those who live in the sea. I learned of the incredible life of whales and how they depend totally on echolocation or sonar to communicate and realized that they could not live and feed in the waters of Whale Channel with the daily presence of supertankers. My family crest is Eagle, and they have given me much inspiration over the years.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDuring the late summer of 2019, I was enjoying an evening in Tofino with Andrea, my wife. We were having a meal at Long Beach Lodge overlooking the beach and a beautiful Tofino sunset. I took several photos and found one weeks later that inspired a memory.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI recall many magic moments with eagles through the years. During courtship, eagles fly high, lock talons, and tumble to the earth or the ocean below. I recall one incident that stands out. It was a beautiful day in Kitkatla, my home village, and two eagles locked talons and twirled around and around as they tumbled to the ocean below. They hung on so close to the water that when they let go, they just skimmed the water as they rose to the heavens again. I will briefly explain to you how it works for me. Keep in mind that there are many cultural leaders in the world, and ceremonies change among different\u003cbr\u003epeople; there is not a right or wrong way. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA purification ceremony consists of four rounds: a spoken message, song, prayer, and water poured over hot rocks. We look to the Creator of all for enlightenment and guidance; we pray for ourselves and others. We ask for knowledge, healing, vision, and strength. After each round, the door opens to release steam and bring in drinking water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first round is for the teacher and the little children, the second is for the women and the healer, the third is for the visionary and the men, and the fourth round is for the leader and the elders. I have finally had the privilege of sharing a campfire, meals, and a tent with my brother, Matt. I will always envision my brother riding with his collar up and his stetson pulled low over his face to protect him from the wind-driven snow. While I lived in Tofino, fishing the local waters or just cruising was a passion of mine. There were many times early in the morning or returning in the evening when the tide was low, and the sand bar had many great blue herons patiently waiting for a meal. I used to think they were like people in the city waiting for a bus, and it always made me smile. I traveled to Eagle Aerie Gallery for the long weekend of July this year and was reminded of this scene. I've been thinking about it since creating the print Tofino Sunrise this spring with the heron on the tidal flats. I always knew this piece would be done, and now is the time to bring this one to reality.
