The village numbered about five hundred people and our lives revolved around the sea. Fishing, hunting, and harvesting from the land was a way of life. The lifestyle would be something close to what we call survival today. For the children, there was a wonderful playground called the beach. It was full of awe and mystery. Our time reminder was the ebb and flow of running tide. Our music was the cry of Eagle, Raven and gulls; the song of the Whale, and howl of the wolf. I cannot recall the word “boring”. After a half-century of living in British Columbia, it is no surprise that I often can be found in the village of Tofino on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. I love to play with my children on the beach, watching a sunset, looking for passing whales at sea, or building castles in the sand. I do believe I will always return to the joy of the sea near some Ocean Village. I can identify with the lines from the John Maysfield poem, Sea Fever:

“I must go down to the sea again, for the call of the running tide is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied.”

Edition Date: July 1996
Artist: Roy Henry Vickers
Medium: Serigraph
Image Size: 14 1/2" x 9"

Story

I love canoes, and I love fishing; they go together well. Blue whales have no teeth and have only their sheer size to defend themselves. But orcas are not a blue whale's greatest threat. It was reported that in 2000, there were fewer than 10,000 left in our oceans due to the whaling industry. I've read different reports on the numbers of whales killed by the early part of the 20th century, all of those numbers being very well into the thousands! During my years in Tofino, so many good things happened. I became a passionate steelhead fisherman, I built Eagle Aerie Gallery, and my career took a turn for the better and has remained on a continuous upward curve. I could see myself as a contemporary artist and create images inspired by the rain, wind, and sun. It has been a great satisfaction to be inspired by my relationship with nature. Some of the most powerful images to come during my Tofino years have been those of the whales. The gray whale, the orca, and the humpback have always been exciting to see and have always thrilled me. I’ve had whales come so close to my boat that they touched it. I’ve fallen asleep to whales’ loud breathing nearby, and I’ve been thrilled by the sound of the whales’ songs surrounding me during scuba dives. I’ve enjoyed the faces of those who have seen whales for the first time. I’ve been overwhelmed with sadness at the sight of a dead beached whale on Whaler Island near Tofino. One of the most exciting happenings in the waters around Tofino has been the return of the humpback. In the early 1980s, one would have to take a long trip offshore to catch a glimpse of a humpback whale. When one of my staff showed me a picture she had taken of a sunset through the beach grass on Whaler Island, I was inspired to create this image of a humpback whale spyhopping.

Thank you, Adrienne for inspiring WHALER.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0011/9996/4204/files/4e7ff246-70ba-4af2-adfd-19fd39f188ed.jpg?v=1775945733
commitment-artist-proof-4-of-7
COMMITMENT - ARTIST PROOF #4/7

Edition Date: 2012
Artist: Roy Henry Vickers
Medium: Serigraph
Image Size: 18 7/8" X 11 7/8"

Edition Size: 7 Artist Proofs

Story

Finding someone who can be your friend, lover, and companion through life is a blessing. This name for the moon in the middle of winter can be found in other cultures as well. In the shamanic tradition, the winter is the time of the elder; we hear the saying, “the winter of their years,” when referring to the elders. The colour of the winter is white, and so is the hair of the old ones. When those relatives have passed through the winter, they leave this world and become ancestors on the other side. In our language, we have a saying: When one is walking in the truth, beauty, and strength of oneself, it is said that they are walking on the breath of the ancestors. During the adoption ceremony, I was given a Gisgaast name, Skun Wihaast, which translates to Big Fireweed Plant. This brings me to another full circle as I have moved back to the north country not far from Greenville, where I was born, and my birth name was Wihaast, meaning Bigfireweed in the Nisgaa language. I live near the village of Kispiox and I am currently working in Walter’s old studio.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0011/9996/4204/files/720212c3-3965-40f1-868a-f0ae23bcd8b5.png?v=1758234238
harmony-remarque-2-10
Harmony - Remarque #2/10

Edition Date: March 2011
Artist: Roy Henry Vickers
Medium: Remarque
Image Size: 19" x 12"
Edition Size: 10 Remarques

Story

This whale project began when I saw some of Carly Steven's drawings while she was working at Eagle Aerie Gallery. I asked Carly if she would consider combining styles and creating a very original print. She agreed, and the process of communication began. Whales have been a big part of people's lives around the Tofino neighborhood for thousands of years. There are many stories of the importance of the whale to the Nuu Chah Nulth way of life. Today, we have seen a resurgence in whales and interest in them, so much so that thousands come to Tofino every year for an experience with whales. These close contacts leave us in awe and wonder at the gentleness of these giant creatures. My first close encounter with a Grey whale happened many years ago in Grice Bay, a piece of sheltered inlet water close to Tofino. I can still see this grey whale swimming up close to my boat, going underneath the boat and coming up on the other side. The whale was very friendly and not afraid of human contact. I will never forget leaning over the side of my boat, touching the whale, and seeing its skin surface ripple in reaction to the touch of a human hand. I found it amazing that the whale could feel such a soft touch. I also remember taking a friend to see this whale who came to be known as Harmony. My friend was so moved by the experience that he could hardly get out of the boat when we returned.

Harmony is an appropriate name for this creation, as it also took harmony between two artists to create this image. She was the friendliest grey whale to visit our area, known for her love of human contact. When she arrived to Clayoquot Sound, the whale watching industry was just beginning and there were only a few people doing whale research.

My friend Sharron Carbone was one of the whale watching industry pioneers at that time. She was told of a friendly grey whale close by in Grice Bay and she set out to find it. Sharron was in a 12’ zodiac with two others in the boat when they came across the whale. This friendly whale swam beside the boat and stuck her head out of the water. Sharron amazingly reached out, hugged the whale’s head, and kissed her. She looked at this whale and thought “what amazing harmony”. From then on, the whale became lovingly known as Harmony. She stayed for the summer, feeding and visiting the whale watchers. Some people were scared of her. One boat of fisherman panicked when she came too close and injured her with their engine props when trying to get away from her. At the end of the season, Sharron didn’t come across her again, figuring she left for her journey south for the winter.

It was never confirmed that Harmony visited the area again, as identifying whales in the area didn’t begin until some years later.
