Morning rays came shining through the clouds, showing us the way. We left the Kitasoo people of Klemtu in the early hours before there was much light. The sea was calm, and the clouds hung low over the land on that beautiful day in July.

My partner canoe, Skookum Kalitan (with my friend, John Grant, in the skipper's seat), made her way just off the port side of my own. We were over a week and many hundreds of miles into our thousand-mile journey from Hazelton to Victoria. The pullers kept a steady pace of about six knots. By this point, everyone was comfortable in their daily routine of canoeing.

The night before, we enjoyed a wonderful meal with much singing and dancing as we celebrated the Vision Quest Journey of Hope with our hosts, the Kitasoo. The people of Bella Bella (also known as Waglisla) were awaiting our arrival later that day, but for the time being, we were captivated by the beauty of a majestic Kitasoo Dawn.
