I have friends whose relatives were keepers of the lighthouse and weather station on Trial Island which allowed me a number of opportunities to visit. As we sat one day and visited over coffee, I was struck by the familiarity of the ocean view and the isolation from the city. I realized that being isolated from city life felt good to me, and so I enjoyed Trial Island even more. Another visit found me in the center of a pod of orcas and the thrill of being so close to these animals, as I had been before was exhilarating. The scene of the canoe and the killer whales was inspired by a photograph that a friend had taken from his equally thrilling encounter.
