Part of Roy's 1985 cheque series.
In 1985, Roy was commissioned by a Canadian bank to create a series of four background images for bank cheques. Because they were to be used as cheques, the dimensions had to match a standard cheque shape, and the palette had to be softer than his usual bold colour work to avoid overpowering the information on the cheques.
In 1985, Roy was building his gallery in Tofino and falling in love with the landscapes there. Spring Migration was inspired by the whales he saw while living in Tofino. Roy remembers this as a magical time in his life.
