After fifteen years of living in Tofino, I have returned to Victoria, where I grew up and began my career as an artist. These days I return to my gallery in Tofino as a tourist and stay in hotels and motels. It has been rewarding in many ways; I experience the company of others traveling to one of the world’s most beautiful destinations. I enjoy the hospitality of the Cable Cove Inn, Ocean Village, Pacific Sands, Tofino Motel, Wickaninnish Inn, and others.

Calm Waters comes from a visit to Ocean Village in March 2000. While staying and enjoying the company of Moe and Maureen, and the staff at Ocean Village, I experienced the beauty of our pacific sunsets. I noticed some of the photos Moe had taken and was inspired to take some of my own. Toward the end of my stay at Ocean Village, Moe showed me a beautiful photo of a sunset on the beach. The colors yellow, orange, lavender, and gray are predominant, as well as the charcoal silhouettes of people on the beach. It took some time before I realized that one of the people in the picture was myself. I recall the conversation I was having at the time; it was with a man, and his wife, who had been in my gallery earlier that day, and we were enjoying a visit as we watched the sun setting.

I was so moved, so I asked Moe if I could use it as the subject of my next work. So it is that Calm Waters was born, which captures where I am in my journey through life today. I love the interaction with people, which always seems to include the love and passion for the beauty of our West Coast.
