Pink Salmon - Drum Series - FRAMED BLOCK MOUNT

Edition Date: August 2002
Artist: Roy Henry Vickers
Medium: Framed Block Mount
Image Size: 14" x 14"

The month of August has come and gone and the last days of Summer are slipping by. This month of August is called the moon of Pink Salmon. This is the time for the harvest of the smallest of the salmon species and an important harvest for my ancestors. For me, the Pink Salmon is not a big attraction, it is the bottom of the salmon scale in my humble opinion. My grandfather Henry always looked forward to the Pink Salmon fishing, he loved it boiled in a “Humpy Soup”. For me, it is a sign of the coming of Autumn and my mind goes to the mountains in search of other food. For the time being, I will content myself with finishing this presentation of Pink Salmon.

The circle represents the cycle of life, beginning with the Egg, followed by the Alevin, Fry, Smolt and Sea Run. The cycle is complete with the spawning male and female, the male with its pronounced humpback. The dying Pink Salmon is all black with the rib bones showing. So the cycle ends with the beginning of another, the birth and death shown in a dramatic fashion in the creeks and rivers of the West Coast of BC. The circle is also the drum that voices the heartbeat of nations, as well as the moon of the Pink Salmon.
