Solstice 1998 - ARTIST PROOF #8/15

Edition Date: December 1998
Artist: Roy Henry Vickers
Medium: Serigraph
Image Size:  9" x 10.5"
Edition Size: 15 Artist Proofs

In the past few years, I have been releasing a special edition print that marks the transition from Autumn to Winter and the beginning of the Christmas season. This year, the inspiration came when a friend of mine, John Elliot, told me what the moon was called in December, “The Moon of Putting Your Paddles Away in the Bush.

This is the time of year when all the food gathering has been done and it is no longer safe to be on the ocean in a canoe. Everyone’s attention is turned towards the longhouse, where the celebration of family and culture unfolds through ancestral songs and dances.

This work comes with its softness of mauves and purples, creating a snow scene inspired by the winter of ‘96. The ghost of the canoe and paddles reminds me of The Moon of Putting Your Paddles Away in the Bush, And so it is that Solstice ‘98 has come.
