- Story
The story behind the creation of Ull and Mokskm Ull comes from the language of my paternal ancestors. We come from a village archeologically proven to have been continuously inhabited for over 5,000 years. In the language of my ancestors, the word we use for black bear is Ull, and the word for spirit bear is Mokskm Ull. The literal translation of Mokskm Ull is white black bear.
It took biologists decades to find that the spirit bear is a white black bear. I am amazed at the knowledge that Indigenous people have, and so much can be discovered by learning the language of the people.
