- Story
In the old days, oolichan were prepared in many ways and oolichan oil was the prized commodity among all peoples. It was so valuable that the Haida traded their large ocean-going canoes for the oil. When the Europeans arrived they discovered that dried oolichan were so full of natural oil that they could be burned like a candle.
My friend and SWCC supporter, Paul Colangelo showed me a photo he took of the oolichan burning and inspired this creation. We are fighting to save the dwindling return of the oolichan to many of the rivers on the Northwest coast.
Proceeds from this fine art print will go to the Raincoast Conservation Foundation as well as the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition. We must continue to do whatever we can to preserve the runs of oolichan to all rivers on the coast.
