The experience I shared with a friend of mine this last hunting season is one I shall always remember. It was a beautiful late autumn afternoon, and we were enjoying a ride in the high country. It was a special day, as they all are in the mountains. I was not thinking of a hunt as much as I was interested in seeing a new country.

We rode through a narrow pass into a valley that was lovingly called “The 360” because no matter which direction you looked, you could see snowy peaks with Stone Sheep lounging about. I could not help but consider the few people who were privy to such majesty and beauty. A feeling of awe swept over me as I soaked up the experience; it was a special privilege that was mine to share with a few friends in my life.

The ride back to camp was one of peaceful contemplation, with thoughts of migrating birds, stone sheep, rocky mountain bighorn, bugling elk, and a man riding over a saddle high in the mountains. That evening, after a good hot meal, I was enjoying the last moments of consciousness before sleep overtook me when a vision came to me. I saw a friend riding over a saddle in the Rockies as the sun set on another day in the high country. Two rams, one a bighorn, the other a Stone Sheep, watching the rider as another day came to a close in, The Saddle.
