It was a lovely coastal evening in late May. My friend Norm Larsen and I traveled from Port Edward to a beautiful anchorage we call Bear Bay, situated in our Gitxaala territories. Bear Bay has been a traditional harvesting area for thousands of years. I feel at home there; I can sense the presence of ancestors when I visit. We were making our way to a new Marina called MK Bay near Kitamaat. There was a beautiful sunset as we relaxed after a long cruise, and I took a few photos. The next day we visited Hartley Bay, then on to Bishop Bay Hot Springs where we enjoyed a wonderful bath. The cruise was full of adventure, as they always are, and we finally reached MK Bay Marina and a new berth for the M.V. Andrea Marie.I received a call from MK Bay two days later. A storm came up the inlet; the waves washed over the stern and sunk my boat. She is gone forever, and I treasure the memories that remain. There are a number of artworks created from ocean voyages over the years, and this creation is the last.My memory goes back to that last anchorage at Bear Bay which inspired this creation appropriately titled, Last Anchorage.
