I lived in Tofino for 15 years and did over 100 dives, sometimes collecting for the Vancouver public aquarium, sometimes diving with friends for pleasure, collecting rock scallops and opercula, the trap door to a red turbine snail. There were areas of Clayoquot sound where ravens fed on red turbine snails at low tide and I could go and collect the opercula for inlay in my carving projects.
There were a few times when I came upon a lair or underwater den of the Wolf Eel and despite their ferocious look they were friendly to the point of allowing you to pet them gently on the top of their heads. I was warned by diving friends to keep your fingers together so your hand didn't look like a small octopus! I think of many beautiful underwater sights and the one that always comes to mind is a friendly Wolf Eel poking its head out of it's tiny dwelling.
